Week 10
Hey Everyone,
My prayers have been with all of those affected by Hurricane
Harvey over the past few days and continue to be affected. The ward members and
some of our investigators have been worried for my family and friends in
Houston which has been comforting. But I still wish there was more I could do
for them there. Just last night an investigator asked me if I thought God or
Satan was the cause of the hurricane. I had no idea how to answer that
question. But I know that at times like these we we have the choice of who to
follow. There are a lot of people take advantage of others during disaster like
these. But there are others who reach out with hands of comfort and service.
Luckily the things I have been hearing have been good. I've heard that people
have gotten in their personal boats and gone to help rescue people from their
homes. We always have the choice of who to follow and what kind of influence we
want to be.
I want to say that even if we've chosen to follow wrong paths in the past, we can always choose to start following the right path. With the help of our Savior, a desire to follow Him, and the faith to act, we can take the necessary steps to get back on that path.
Right now we're teaching a man and a woman who have changed more than anyone I know. They have a marriage date, baptismal date, and a strong desire to raise their family in a loving home. Comparing that to just a couple of years ago when they were homeless and addicted to drugs it testifies to me that the power to change is real. Two years ago they were sleeping in a car in West Covina when they prayed for help improving their lives, and then a set of missionaries rode by on bikes. They waved them down and now two years later they're in Boron getting ready to be married and baptized in November. God loves each and every one of us. That is one of my favorite truths. I always feel the spirit when I testify of that. I know the reason I feel the spirit is because it's true and it's one of the things Heavenly Father wants them to know. Imagine how different the world would be if everyone saw themselves and each other how God sees them? One of my favorite things about being on a mission so far is that I'm here to help other people understand that God loves them, and because He loves them He wants them to be happy. And because of that He gave us His son, Jesus Christ, and His gospel.
If we follow that gospel we will be blessed in so many ways. I know that's true. Look for the blessings in your lives, even if things don't seem to be going the way you planned or hoped. I hope and pray that the people affected my the hurricane in Texas will be protected and watched over. I hope the families of those who have lost their lives will be comforted and strengthened. I know they will see their family members again. I'm so glad to have heard that help has already started to arrive. There's a famous graffiti-ed bridge in Houston that says "Be Someone" and the people of Houston love it and are living it right now as they're helping one another. So I'd just like to add to that and ask everyone to be someone who chooses to show others the love I know Heavenly Father has for each of you.
